We Are the Weirdos

Alice Says Go Fuck Yourself and Agape Editions editors have come together to create an anthology of ekphrastic poetry that responds to music.

We Are the Weirdos: A Chaotic Poetry Playlist for Outliers, Hot Messes, and Punk Bitches from Hell will be edited by Fox Henry Frazier, Cee Martinez, Jessica Walsh, Jasmine An, and Jennifer MacBain-Stephens. This project will take place in lieu of the next few issues of Alice, and will be published in print form through Agape Editions.

We’re looking for work that engages with weird, misfit, or underrated stuff — songs by fiercely talented people who are maybe a little messy, or underdogs, or ‘alternative,’ or who simply haven’t been given the attention they deserve.

We aren’t entirely against poems replying to Top 40 fare — but it’ll be an uphill battle for those to find a place here. As a general rule, we’re more interested in the unfamiliar, the ignored, the overlooked, and the forgotten than we are in that which is perennially centered & lauded.

This is an anthology for those who don’t get invited to the it-girl parties — or who, when they do, show up late and hang a little bit away from the main group. You’ll find us drinking in the kitchen or smoking out back.

Are you a skeptical joiner? Compulsive truth-teller? Against-the-grain-goer?Allergic to playing along with the crowd, even when it would make life easier?

If you make your own chances, your own zines, and/or your own scenes, it is entirely possible that we are your people.

Send us your poems in response to songs by:

Hole, Gogol Bordello, Lana Del Rey, Cardi B, Skeletonbreath, Sofia Isella, Kneecap, Theatre of Tragedy, Enigma, Megan Thee Stallion, Florence and the Machine, Bedouine, Irish Moutarde, Biig Piig, Sia, Tolü Makay,  Björk, Ebo Taylor, David Guetta, Allison Russell, P!nk, Sleater-Kinney, Fela Kuti, Wyvern Lingo, Nina Simone, Samia, Pretty Loud, Denise Chaila, The Bleeding Irish, Jenny Lewis, boygenius, Maija Sofia, Public Enemy, Lulu & the Lampshades, OWEL, or some other cool shit we’ve maybe never heard of !
